Challenge
Amnesty International in Sri Lanka wanted to publish four stories drawn from the experiences of discrimination and violence of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex (LGBTI) people. I was commissioned to illustrate the story of Kiruthik, a lesbian woman who was abused and harassed because of her sexuality with no recourse from the law. This story had to be done with a unique image style, word-image relationships, undrawn inferences, and layout.
Execution
I used the colour palette to convey the mood changes in Kiruthika's experience. The use of cold blues and purples to capture the fear and isolation when threatened by violence, juxtaposed with brighter colours to illustrate the happier times.
