The Challenge
Theena Kumaragurunathan’s debut novel, First Utterance, is known as a meticulous and experimental piece of writing that made an important contribution to the niche English literary scene in Sri Lanka. The first installment of a trilogy, it is about creation and destruction, the cyclicality of beginnings and endings. The book was shortlisted for the Gratien Awards 2001-2003, featured in the Huffington Post and shortlisted for the Fairway Galle Literary Festival. The pinnacle of its success was when the book was cited in a Cambridge University Press Publication on Magic Realism and Literature.
Execution
I captured the essence of the text by digitally illustrating the Urobori that devour themselves in a cyclic theme of creation and destruction.
